Mildred Louise Varenholt, 87, passed away Saturday, June 24, 2017 in Jacksonville, FL. She was born August 30, 1929 in Grand Ridge, Florida to Roy Gilley and Bertha Hamilton-Gilley.
Mildred graduated from Robert E. Lee High School and began her career at the U.S. Navy Exchange at NAS, Jacksonville where she was employed for 16 years. Later on she worked at Axle Service of Jacksonville before she retired. She was the devoted wife of 63 years to Armand "Mike" Varenholt, and moved to Washington DC and Chicago while he was a United States Secret Service Agent. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved to entertain, play bridge and spend time with her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents Roy and Bertha Gilley, her brother Floyd Gilley and her sister Hazel Gilley Lohr.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years Armand "Mike" Varenholt, her son Michael Hodges and her daughter Jacqueline Varenholt Crawford. Her grandchildren Erik (Kellie) Hodges, Jennifer (Barry) Hickman and Lauren (Kyle) Brewer. Her great-grandchildren Zoe Hodges, Ian Hodges, Braxton Hickman, Hunter Hickman, Kynleigh Hickman and Elsie Brewer. Her nephews and nieces Roy Lohr, Sandi Lohr Cliett, Fred Gilley, Cathy Froitzheim and John Lohr.
Family will receive friends this Wednesday, June 28, 2017 from 5-7 PM at Arlington Funeral Home Chapel with a rosary said in her memory.
A funeral mass will be at Holy Spirit Catholic Church on June 29, 2017 at 1 PM with Father Anthony Bonela officiating.
Interment will follow in Arlington Park Cemetery.
